Week 41 - Injector Long MD Monday 06/10 08:00 to Thursday 09/10 08:00

- Change of SPS supercycle: LHC-FT500_PDOT_V1 => It is the nominal LHC cycle: 450 GeV/c, 18 BP = 21.6 s (i.e. the same as the one already used in the last Injector Long MD of weeks 28 and 33)

- Only 1 SPS cycle this time in the supercycle (and not 2 as it was the case during week 28 to allow the PS to have more cycles for its users)!

- SPS user = LHC1

- Timing sequence in the CBCM = LHC1-0/1/3(1)

Pre-requisites:

- The interlock threshold on the temperature of the MKE kickers should be ~ 90º C (it should be ~ 70º C when there are extractions) => No need to call Etienne Carlier anymore as it is done in SIS

- During (the scrubbing run and) the LONG MDs with LHC beam the ZS are RETRACTED / HV to 0 kV / ION TRAPS ON (inform the ZS expert). The cooling circuit for the septa magnets (circuits 214, 414 and 614) should be switched OFF (by TI). Block the fast vacuum valves OUT in the injection and extraction areas (LSS1, LSS2, LSS6) => Inform Giovanna Vandoni (AT/VAC, 163269) who should take care of this (also after the MD to come back to the initial situation)

- The 2 (dipole) magnets which are used to create a magnetic field in the ecloud monitors are: MDHW5183 with 25 A and MDPH51753 with 28.5 A. These values correspond to a field of 0.12 T.

- Monday 06/10 (08:00 - 09:00) - Change supercycles in the PS and SPS (OP) + Hardware test for ~ 30 min to test a new module for the tuning of the 10 MHz cavities in the PS (Matthias Haase) => The 50 ns LHC beam will be delivered to the SPS (up to 4 batches)

- Monday 06/10 (09:00 - 23:00) Bunch intensity scan with the 50 ns LHC beam in the PSB, PS and SPS (OP, RF and ABP in PSB/PS/SPS)

=> Procedure: Start with ~ 10% of the nominal (25 ns) bunch intensity in the PSB. Once the PSB gives its green light, the PS will take the beam (this corresponds to 20% of the nominal beam) and once it gives its green light the SPS will finally take it. Repeat the same procedure during the whole day for the various intensities available in the PSB (10%, 20%, 1/3, 50% of the nominal 25 ns beam) => Check in particular the MKDVs heating/outgassing in the SPS

- Monday 06/10 (23:00) to Tuesday 07/10 (06:00) - 50 ns LHC beam in the SPS with ~ 2/3 of the nominal bunch intensity and up to 4 batches (E. Metral) => The intensity will in fact depend on the intensity threshold observed with the MKDVs during the day

- Tuesday 07/10 (06:00 - 07:00) - Change supercycle in the PS (OP) => The 75 ns LHC beam will be delivered to the SPS (up to 4 batches)

- Tuesday 07/10 (07:00 - 22:00) Bunch intensity scan with the 75 ns LHC beam in the PSB, PS and SPS (OP, RF and ABP in PSB/PS/SPS)

=> Procedure: Start with ~ 10% of the nominal (25 ns) bunch intensity in the PSB. Once the PSB gives its green light, the PS will take the beam (this corresponds to 30% of the nominal beam) and once it gives its green light the SPS will finally take it. Repeat the same procedure during the whole day for the various intensities available in the PSB (10%, 20%, 1/3 of the nominal 25 ns beam) => Check in particular the bunch length increase along the batches in the SPS

- Tuesday 07/10 (22:00 - 23:00) - Change supercycle in the PS (OP) => The nominal 25 ns LHC beam will be delivered to the SPS (up to 4 batches)

- Tuesday 07/10 (23:00 - 24:00) - 25 ns LHC beam in the PSB with ~ nominal bunch intensity (OP, RF and ABP)

- Wednesday 08/10 (00:00 - 01:00) - 25 ns LHC beam in the PS with ~ nominal bunch intensity (OP, RF and ABP)

- Wednesday 08/10 (01:00 - 07:00) - 25 ns LHC beam in the SPS with ~ nominal bunch intensity (OP, RF and ABP) => Check in particular the ecloud on SPS liner

- Wednesday 08/10 (07:00 - 08:00) - Change supercycle in the PS (OP) => The LHCINDIV (4E10 p/b) bunch and the LHCPILOT (5E9 p/b) will be delivered to the SPS

- Wednesday 08/10 (08:00 - 09:00) - LHCINDIV (~4E10 p/b) bunch and LHCPILOT (5E9 p/b) in the PSB (OP, RF and ABP)

- Wednesday 08/10 (09:00 - 10:00) - LHCINDIV (~4E10 p/b) bunch and LHCPILOT (5E9 p/b) in the PS (OP, RF and ABP)

- Wednesday 08/10 (10:00 - 11:00) - Access to install a matching monitor camera in BA5 (Thibaut Lefevre) + InCA (S. Deghaye)

- Wednesday 08/10 (11:00 - 15:00) - InCA (S. Deghaye) + Matching monitors’ study in the SPS (in //) with the LHCINDIV (~ 4E10 p/b) bunch (E. Benedetto) => In case the intensifiers do not work, the following actions should be taken:

1) Access in BA5 to remove the intensifiers (1 h)

2) Change PS supercycle to put the 25 ns beam (only 24 bunches, i.e. 2 PSB rings) with ½ nominal intensity

- Wednesday 08/10 (15:00 – 21:00) – Matching monitors’ study in the SPS with either LHCINDIV or LHC25 (E. Benedetto)

- Wednesday 08/10 (21:00 - 22:00) - Access to remove the matching monitor camera in BA5 (Thibaut Lefevre) + change PS supercycle for the next MD if we had to put the 25 ns beam for Elena

- Wednesday 08/10 (22:00) to Thursday 09/10 (04:00) - Study in the SPS with 2 bunches of different intensities: LHCINDIV (1.15E11 p/b) + LHCPILOT (5E9 p/b) (E. Metral, T. Bohl) => Adjust everything for the LHCINDIV and see what we can achieve at top energy with these 2 bunches in the SPS (distance between the 2 bunches should be ~ 2021 ns, for the 43´43 scheme, or ~ 524 ns, for the 156´156 scheme)

- Thursday 09/10 (04:00 - 07:00) - BQK calibration + other studies with the LHCINDIV (1.15E11 p/b) bunch (R. Steinhagen)

- Thursday 09/10 (07:00 - 08:00) - Recovery from MD (OP)

  • Change of supercycle: 2CNGS-LHCFAST-CNGS_V1
  • Send beam to physics at 08:00
