Week 25 - Injector Long MD Monday 15/06 08:00 to Friday 19/06 08:00

- Change of SPS supercycle: LHC_4Inj_FB10860_FT500_2009_V1 => It is the nominal LHC cycle: 450 GeV/c, 18 BP = 21.6 s

- SPS user = LHC1

- RF MMI target = LHC25NS

- Timing sequence in the CBCM = LHC1-0/1/3(1)

Pre-requisites:

- The interlock threshold on the temperature of the MKE kickers should be ~ 90º C (it should be ~ 70º C when there are extractions) => No need to call Etienne Carlier anymore as it is done in SIS

- During (the scrubbing run and) the LONG MDs with LHC beam the ZS are RETRACTED / HV to 0 kV / ION TRAPS ON (inform the ZS expert). The cooling circuit for the septa magnets (circuits 214, 414 and 614) should be switched OFF (by TI from the CCC). Block the fast vacuum valves OUT in the injection and extraction areas (LSS1, LSS2, LSS6) => Giovanna Vandoni (TE/VSC, 163269 => ~ 20 min) will take care of this (also after the MD to come back to the initial situation)

- The magnets with the e-cloud monitors are 4 dipoles: MDHW51832, 51836, 51838, 51853, all with 0.12 T (MDHW51832 with 25 A). In addition, there is a C-magnet (MDPH51753 with 28.5 A, in series with 754 to compensate) which contains a sample which can be inserted and removed .

Monday 15/06 (08:00) until Thursday 18/06 (08:00) - SPS ecloud studies => We will increase the bunch intensity from ~ 2-3 x 1010 p/b to ~ 1.3 x 1011 p/b, the number of bunches from 12 to 72, and the number of batches from 1 to 4 to end up with (hopefully) the nominal parameters shown below

Beam conditions: Nominal LHC beam in SPS

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b (at injection) and ~ 1.15 x 1011 p/b (at top energy)

Transverse emittances: e* < 3 microm

Longitudinal emittance: eL* = 0.35 eVs

Participants for the beam set up: OP, RF, ABP

Monday 15/06 (08:00 - 14:00)

HW compensation (~ 2 h => During this time, part of the PS dedicated MD foreseen on Tuesday can be done)

An access might be needed for W. Hofle (for the transverse dampers) for ~ 1/2 h in LSS2 at 10:00 or 10:30 depending on RP => To be confirmed by Wolfgang on Monday morning

Setting-up of Injection and Capture of the 25 ns LHC beam

Injection (kicker timing adjustment)

Tune and chromaticity measurement and adjustment

#batches = 1 (12 bunches)

Nb  ~ 2-3 x 1010 p/b

Verify that following measurements work:

Monday 15/06 (14:00 - 20:00)

Check injection (kicker timing adjustment)

Feedforward and longitudinal feedback setting-up

Check transverse dampers

#batches = 1 (24, then 36, then 48, then 60 and finally 72 bunches) (watch the vacuum!!! and in particular the outgassing of MKDV1 and ZS ion trap)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b => PSB and PS experts should make the necessary adjustments to be able to increase the intensity

Monday 15/06 (20:00) - Tuesday 16/06 (09:00)

Scrubbing run + studies of the 3 coated MBB magnets

#batches = 1 (72 bunches)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b

Tuesday 16/06 (09:00 - 13:00)

PS SEM-GRIDS SMH42 and injection (48, 52, 54) SEM-grids (R. Steerenberg) => PS dedicated MD, i.e. no beam extracted to the SPS

During this time we can do/start the HW compensation of the cycle to be used for crystal studies (MD_26_120_L18000_2009_V1, 15 BP = 18 s, user LHC2) + Test coasts at 120 GeV/c (and check instrumentation timings etc.) + Possible access for crystal experiment

Tuesday 16/06 (13:00 - 24:00)

Setting-up for multiple injections (from 2 to 4) => When we go to 2 batches, ~ 2 h are needed for RF adjustments (T. Bohl and V. Rossi)

#batches = 1-4 (72 bunches) (the number of batches will be maximized compatibly with the MKE heating and the vacuum initially)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b

Call BT expert (Etienne Carlier) to do the fine synchronization of the injection kickers

Ecloud feedback studies (W. Hofle)

Wednesday 17/06 (00:00 - 10:00)

Scrubbing run + studies of the 3 coated MBB magnets

#batches = 1-4 (72 bunches) (the number of batches will be maximized compatibly with the MKE heating and the vacuum)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b

Wednesday 17/06 (10:00 - 18:00)

RF studies (T. Bohl)

#batches = 1-4 (72 bunches)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b

Wednesday 17/06 (18:00 - 24:00)

For this MD, one needs (1) to unblock the vacuum valves in the injection and extraction areas (Giovanna Vandoni, TE/VSC, 163269 => ~ 20 min), and (ii) to restart the cooling circuit for the septa magnets circuits 214, 414 and 614 (TI from the CCC)

LHC transfer lines studies (M. Meddahi)

- #batches = 1-4 (72 bunches => Most of the time it will be 12 bunches) with 5E10 p/b => PSB and PS experts should make the necessary adjustments to be able to decrease / increase the intensity

- Test also the interleaved

- LHC injection sequencing (also with High Intensity)

Thursday 18/06 (00:00 - 08:30)

For this MD, one needs (1) to block the vacuum valves in the injection and extraction areas (Giovanna Vandoni, TE/VSC, 163269 => ~ 20 min), and (ii) to switch OFF the cooling circuit for the septa magnets circuits 214, 414 and 614 (TI from the CCC)

Scrubbing run + effect of coated MBB magnets

#batches = 1-4 (72 bunches)

Nb = 1.3 x 1011 p/b

Thursday 18/06 (08:30 - 09:00) - End of the MD and cool-down time for accesses

Unblock the vacuum valves in the injection and extraction areas (Giovanna Vandoni, TE/VSC, 163269 => ~ 20 min)

Ask TI to restart the cooling circuit for the septa magnets (circuits 214, 414 and 614)

J. Borburgh should verify the conditioning of the septa

L. Ducimetiere and Viliam Senaj should verify the conditioning of the MKDV

MDs can take place in the PS as there will be no beam in the SPS between 08:30 and 15:00 => Long LHC cycle (Y. Papaphilippou) + TT2 SEM-grids and SEM-wires (R. Steerenberg) + Test on a single vacuum sector an outgassing procedure for the Titanium sublimation pumps of the PS (G. Vandoni)

Thursday 18/06 (09:00 - 11:00)

- Access in the SPS in LSS5 to change and re-adjust the quartz for the crystal experiment (vacuum has to be broken).

- During this time, 2 other accesses will take place: LSS2 (work on the ZS5) and LSS6 (endoscopy of the dipole 6.2130 as a hot spot was found there => In fact this intervention already took place on 10/06/09, as there was a beam stop in the PS => The alignment will be checked).

Thursday 18/06 (11:00 - 15:00)

- We close the SPS and pump. During this time we can do/start the HW compensation of the cycle to be used for crystal studies (MD_26_120_L18000_2009_V1, 15 BP = 18 s, user LHC2, RF MMI target = LHCMONO) + test coasts at 120 GeV/c (if not yet done/finished on Tuesday 16/06)
