Week 35 - Injector Long MD

(From Tuesday 31/08 at 20:00 to Thursday 02/09 at 20:00 in dedicated and from Friday 03/09 08:00 to Saturday 04/09 08:00 in // to LHC)

Prior to this MD block there is a 48 hours Technical Stop in the SPS (up to 36 hours in the CPS complex). The SPS Technical Stop extends from Monday 30/08 at 08:00 to Wednesday 31/09 at 08:00 for the SPS. Linac2, PSB and PS will restart on Tuesday at 20:00 the latest.

Linac2

- Wednesday - Friday (from 09:00 to 21:00) => Linac2 pepper pot studies

Contact people: R. Scrivens

- Beam conditions: It requires 1/12 of the Linac2 beam cycles

PSB

- Wednesday 10:30 - Wednesday 18:00 => Studies of instabilities with high intensity ISOLDE beams

Contact people: A. Findlay, B. Mikulec, G. Rumolo

- PSB user = MDPSB + NORMGPS or NORMHRS

PS

- Tuesday 20:00 - Thursday 20:00 => Studies of MTE + CT extraction

Contact people: S. Gilardoni

- PSB user = MD2

- PS user = MD4

SPS

- Wednesday 08:00 - Wednesday 11:00 => SPS restart, beam-based orbit correction after the newly installed dipole magnets. This is done using a fixed target beam, so the same physics supercycle as was on Sunday before the Technical Stop will be restored.

- PSB user = SFTPRO or CNGS

- PS user = SFTPRO or CNGS

- SPS user = SFTPRO or CNGS

- RF MMI target =

Contact person: K. Cornelis, BE/OP

- Wednesday 11:00 - Wednesday 12:00 => Supercycle to MD_26_120_18000_2009_V1.csv  (coastable at 120 GeV/c, 15 bp, some references can be found at https://ab-mgt-md-users.web.cern.ch/ab-mgt-md-users/2009/MDCycles/SomeReferencesForpCoastAt120GeV/Ref.htm).

- PSB user = LHCINDIV

- PS user = LHCINDIV

- SPS user = LHCMD1 (pulsed), COAST1 (coast)

- RF MMI target = LHCMONO

For the coast, mask the following SIS interlocks: KICKERS_SPSRING (essentially for the MKD_EARLY_ENABLED), switch off the MDSH119 (otherwise it will trip), POWER_CONVERTERS_TT10 (as some could trip during the coast) and BLRING_DUMP_CHANNEL_VETO.

- Wednesday 12:00 - Friday 08:00 => UA9

Beam conditions: single LHC-type bunch with nominal intensity (1e11)

- PSB user: LHCINDIV

- PS user: LHCINDIV

- SPS user = LHCMD1 (pulsed), COAST1 (coast)

- RF MMI target = LHCMONO

- Timing sequence in the CBCM = LHC2-0/1/2

Contact person: W. Scandale

N.B. from Thursday night on LHC might request beam, in which case the UA9 cycle will be temporarily stopped to allow for the LHC filling, and subsequently resumed.

- Friday 08:00 - Friday 09:00  => Supercycle change to one including the  LHC_4Inj_FB7260_FT_835_2010_V1.csv  cycle (for LHC50, 15bp). Set up

Beam conditions: 50ns beam, 1 batch of 36 bunches, nominal intensity

- PSB user = LHC50

- PS user = LHC50

- SPS user = LHC3 (to be confirmed, now maybe used for the LHC multi-bunch injection on  fast ramp)

- RF MMI target = LHC25NS

- Timing sequence in the CBCM = LHC1-0/1/2(1)

User LHC2 is reserved in the SPS for the multi-bunch injection into the LHC. Now LHC3 also used for the LHC multi-bunch injection with the fast ramp?

Contact people: BE/OP, BE/RF

Pre-requisites to start the high intensity LHC50 MD (next one on the list)

- The interlock threshold on the temperature of the MKE kickers should be 70º C because there are extractions to the LHC in parallel.

- With LHC beam the ZS should be RETRACTED / HV to 20 kV / ION TRAPS ON (the ZS expert must be informed). At the end of the MD Ht conditioning should be foreseen before applying back the HV to its nominal value.

- The cooling circuit for the septa magnets (circuits 214, 414 and 614) should be switched OFF (by TI from the CCC).

- The fast vacuum valves in the injection and extraction areas (LSS1, LSS2, LSS4 and LSS6) are normally blocked OUT (by Tony Mongelluzzo) when there are high intensity MDs in the SPS. However, this time they will not be blocked because of the parallel LHC operation.

- Disconnect the MOPOS (at least the three sextants without the attenuators). Contact Thibaut Lefevre.(BE/BI, 165041). This must be checked to be compatible with the extractions to the LHC.

- The magnets with the e-cloud monitors are 4 dipoles: MDHW51832, 51836, 51838, 51853, all with 0.12 T (MDHW51832 with 25 A). In addition, there is a C-magnet (MDPH51753 with 28.5 A, in series with 754 to compensate) which contains a sample which can be inserted and removed.

- Friday 09:00 - Friday 21:00  =>  Electron cloud studies with the LHC50 beam increasing the current in small steps from nominal to ultimate (4 batches, vacuum and temperature interlocks permitting). The aim of these measurements is to study the dependence of the electron cloud on the bunch intensity (according to simulations, this is a range of parameters in which the electron cloud could decrease with the bunch intensity). In parallel direct e-cloud and pressure measurements.

Beam conditions: 50ns beam, 1 to 4 batches, intensity from nominal to ultimate

Contact people: SPS Upgrade Study Team (E. Shaposhnikova, et al.)

- Friday 21:00 - Friday 22:00  =>  Supercycle change to one including the LHC_4Inj_FB10860_FT835_2010_V1.csv supercycle, 18bp, (some references can be found at https://ab-mgt-md-users.web.cern.ch/ab-mgt-md-users/2009/MDCycles/SomeReferencesForLHCNominalCycle/Ref.htm). Set up

- Friday 22:00 - Saturday 07:00  =>  Electron cloud studies with 25ns spaced beams

Beam conditions: 25ns beam, 1 to 4 batches, nominal or lower intensity

- PSB user = LHC25A+B

- PS user = LHC25

- SPS user = LHC1

- RF MMI target = LHC25NS

Contact people: PS Upgrade Study Team (E. Shaposhnikova, et al.)

- Saturday 07:00 - Saturday 08:00  =>  Recovery from MD, switch back to physics

- Change of supercycle

- Send beam to physics at the earliest time after set up of the physics beams
