Machine development studies in the PS Complex (Linac
2, Linac 3,
PS) and SPS
are aimed at:
preparing the nominal and test beams for LHC in the LHC Injector Chain;
testing new hardware or new tools foreseen for LHC;
preparing the high intensity beams for CNGS
improving the beam performances for operational beams;
preparing the machines for new modes of operation for physics;
improve the understanding of beam physics.
Four types of machine development sessions are foreseen during
the 2008 operation run:
Injector MD with beam to LHC: lasting 3 days
(72 hours). Studies which require magnetic cycles different from those used in
operation are performed preferentially in these sessions. During these MDs the
beam will be sent to LHC.
of the Long MD sessions and of the wednesday MD sessions during the run
is published at the beginning of the year (it is presented at the Accelerator
of the studies foreseen in the various sessions is regularly discussed at
the APC together with machine development results.
The planning is submitted to the approval of the APC
and presented at the ABOC.
PSB, PS and SPS Machine development sessions in parallel with
physics. These are performed during working days and working
hours (08:00 - 18:00) on a cycle of the operation supercycle. The time available for parallel machine
sessions is shared by the PS and the SPS.
